Book report on Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Book details
'Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia' is a successful memoir written by Elizabeth Gilbert, a 2006 publication. The memoir traces the author's psychic journey around the globe that involves self-determination, emotional misery, and personal satisfaction. It is a book I chose to read because it for praise among grateful readers who have praised the phenomenal success of Gilbert's memoir. I was, therefore, curious to know what the memoir is all about. Moreover, the title of the book sounds interesting since it simply gives me a relaxed feeling that all I have to do is to place myself in a comfortable seat or bed and simply enjoy the author's story in taking me to various places in the world that I have never been to before in my life.
Furthermore, I have also seen my close friends telling me that after reading Eat, Pray, and Love, their lives changed for the better. The book made them realize that they have the power of changing their lives for the better rather than just sitting there complaining and feeling depressed. It is because the memoir presents the themes that are simply general and apply to many people's lives. For example feeling sick, depressed, unhappy in marriage, feeling unsatisfied and stuck in life and others feel fearful. Thus, this is a book that I was mainly interested in helping me also discover myself and most of all change the aspects in my life that I felt less happy.
The memoir Eat, Pray, and Love is a story set in three places. Gilbert set aside a year to do something different in her life. The places are Italy, Bali and India. She stayed in these places for four months each. Gilbert chose first to go to Italy because of the stories about Italy that she had read that made her happy. In Rome, she met with Luca Spaghetti, who becomes her friend and introduces her to Rome's pleasures of doing nothing. Despite the pleasures, she suffers the puritan guilt for enjoying the pleasures of the flesh. After about ten days in Rome Gilbert says that she allowed herself to depression and loneliness that brings her down. She thinks back to the short, sad affair with David. However, she manages to make new friends in the remaining six weeks that help her tour various parts of the city. She gains about 23 pounds, but she did not get to bother her, and she focused more on her pleasure of drinking, relaxing, and eating in Rome.
The memoir's second part setting is in a remote village in India known as Ashram. In her stay here Gilbert spends most of her time in deep contemplation and meditation. She also has the tasks of scrubbing the floors of the temple. She also becomes familiar with the yogic path of Hinduism whereby discontentment is as a result of the human belief that little and limited egos make up our whole nature.
Finally, the memoir's last section is set in Bali a Hindu island whereby Gilbert visits for her final spiritual essay. Her aim of visiting Bali is to find a spiritual balance between the world's extremes of the spiritual devotion of India and the worldly pleasures of Italy. Therefore, the main character in this spiritual odyssey is Gilbert, who narrates to us the events of her life abroad. She tells us about the new friends that she meets in Italy, Bali, and India.
The main story of the memoir is about Gilbert's journey of discovering her true self and her spiritual self. The memoir has its creative designing of three main parts showing different setting and their symbol. Each of the parts comprises of 36 short segments that match with the traditional prayer necklace of the Indians that comprises of 108 beads. At the age of 31 Gilbert's prosperous lifestyle and marriage came down to a grueling divorce. To heal her wounds, she started a passionate affair with a man David which also ended in heartbreak. With much heartbreak and depression, she took seriously the opportunity to take a Yoga vacation in Bali and write a story about it. At Bali, she met a 90th generation Indonesian medicine man, Ketut, who informed her to stop worrying too much and start a different thing in her life. That is when she decided to take a year off visiting Italy Bali and India. Italy was a place where she enjoyed all the good cuisine, wine, and the worldly pleasures that it offered. She made new friends and traveled in all parts of the city.
At a rural village in India Gilbert is befriended by a Texan man dealing with house renovations in Austin. Richard helps her start her inner work of how to deal with a messed up love life and get over the heartache of David. By drawing closer to God, she realized that her main obstacle in life did not have the ability to let go. She realized that she had too much fear of surrendering to the top10vietnam unknown and easily distracted by her monkey mind. With this realization, she decides to stop being the social bunny of the ashram and she takes up work of caring for the guest while keeping her silence. She learns the lesson of surrendering to her path of devotion. Finally by visiting Bali, she aims to find a balance between the pleasures of the world involving the spiritual devotion and world pleasures. She writes," the Balinese have to get an award for being the world masters of balance. They are the people who maintain a perfect equilibrium in religion, science and art" (Gilbert, 2006). At Bali Gilbert also meets a medicine woman whom just like Ketut gives her an important emotional education on how "to steadily hold on to this chaotic world" (Gilbert, 2006).
Reading through Gilbert's memoir was a true eye opener. I am mainly pleased with her creative writing especially in the way she organizes her book in a logical manner. Reading this memoir to its end gave me an "aha' moment by reading through Gilbert's experience that I could relate to accounts of my spiritual emptiness, grief and abuse. The author does a good job in applying practical, transformative methods that range from yoga classes, dealing with divorces, traveling and finally spiritual rehabilitation. I, therefore, rely on the truth of this work. I can, therefore, recommend and appeal my friends whose lives have similar troubles can similarly change for the better and those who hope to do so.
